I have fond memories of my children’s childhood.
My husband and I are empty nesters now. Our sons, Thomas and Terrance, are now 31 and 27 years old, respectively, but each time I drive down Vernon Avenue, past the YWCA, I’m reminded of their toddler years.

Black Unemployment Rate Falls to 8.1 percent in August
The unemployment rate for Black workers improved from 8.4 percent in July to 8.1 percent in August, according to the latest jobs report from the Labor Department. Even though the Black jobless rate has decreased more than a percentage point since last year (9.4 percent in August 2015), it is still nearly double the White unemployment rate (4.4 percent).

Local Red Cross welcomes new head
The northern portion of Los Angeles County has a new executive director of the American Red Cross. Raul Claros has joined the team as executive director for Northern Valleys, after serving as a deputy for Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson and says that disasters such as “Superstorm” Sandy, Hurricane Katrina, and the recent earthquake in central Italy are “wake-up” calls that urge county residents to be prepared for an emergency.
