Los Angeles is a focal point for every component, good or bad, including the sickness of human vice. In recent weeks, Derrick Harrison Enrico Brooks, who lists his home of record as Baldwin Village, known informally as “the Jungle,” was charged with two counts of sex trafficking of children, along with distribution of narcotics. These charges stem from forcing a 15-year-old girl to work on the city’s infamous Figueroa Corridor, known for decades as a hub for street walking and other forms of prostitution.
The decades-old saga of sex trafficking along Figueroa added another chapter earlier this summer, as federal and local law enforcement agencies cracked down on predators who control this illicit trade just south of downtown Los Angeles.
Dubbed “Operation Broken Blade,” it was a landmark task force involving the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), IRS Criminal Investigation, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. They focused on the area around the Figueroa Corridor, an infamous 3.5-mile stretch of Figueroa Street centered on Gage Avenue south to Imperial Highway. Informally known as “the Blade (a term lifted for the task force)” or “the Stroll,” in recent years it has been the domain of L.A.’s street gangs, who have transitioned from the narcotics trade to prostitution, since judicial punishment for the latter is less harsh than that associated with controlled substances.
Most of those arrested were members of the Hoover Criminals Gang (HCG); however, at least one is an Indian national, Mukesh Kumar Rambayah, believed to be a hotel manager in the area.
The accused are to appear in court in March 2027.
These activities are of major concern as the holidays approach, since perpetrators take advantage of the spike in crowded transit hubs like Los Angeles to ply their illicit trade.
L.A. District Attorney Nathan Hochman is shifting the focus to prosecuting the customers who patronize the oldest profession.
“If there wasn’t a demand of people willing to pay good, cold, hard cash to have sex with these young girls and boys, the supply would run out,” he reasons.
Concerns have been raised about Super Bowl LXI, which takes place on February 14 in Inglewood, following the adage that such behavior spikes during major sporting events. True or not, deviance and sport share a commonality, as witnessed by the recent arrest of 49ers owner Jed York on suspicion of engaging in prostitution this past August in Ohio. He has pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges.
