Father’s Day is a meaningful reminder of the privilege and responsibility of guiding, supporting, and loving the next generation. Being a father is more than providing for a family. It is an opportunity to shape lives through consistency, sacrifice, and simply being present. Some of my greatest joys have come from watching my children and the young people I have mentored grow in faith, character, and confidence.
A father who is fully present is actively engaged in the lives of his children. That is why I believe resources like Paid Family Leave through the Employment Development Department (EDD) are so important.
Whether welcoming a new baby, supporting a spouse, or caring for a loved one during a serious illness, these are moments that strengthen families and create memories that cannot be replaced. It gives fathers the opportunity to be present during some of life’s most important moments without the added stress of losing income. As a Pastor, I remind men that strength is not simply about pushing through every challenge alone. Jesus Himself took time to pray, recharge, and seek the Father. Self-care is not selfish.
I encourage men to be honest about their struggles, trust God with their burdens, and understand that healthy leaders take care of their spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being. It is also important to note that there is wisdom in asking for help. While provision meets physical needs, presence helps meet the emotional, spiritual, and relational needs that shape a child’s identity and confidence. True provision means caring for the whole person spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically.
Children may not remember every gift or sacrifice, but they will remember a father who was present and involved in their lives. EDD’s Paid Family Leave helps make those moments possible.
