Scandals involving high-profile hip-hop performing artists continue to spread, with Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter being the latest figure. An anonymous accuser claimed that the superstar entrepreneur raped her when she was 13 years old. The incident allegedly took place at an MTV/VMAs after-party in 2000. As the assault occurred, fellow entertainment mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs allegedly looked in on the company of another, unnamed female celebrity.
Combs, currently incarcerated in Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC), is also accused of sexually assaulting the victim. He has been denied bail pending a May 2025 court appearance on a litany of charges ranging from racketeering to sex trafficking.
Since his former girlfriend, singer Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, filed a lawsuit in 2023 alleging rape and physical violence, scores of complainants, male and female, have come forward with similar accusations.
Like Combs, Jay-Z is an American rags-to-riches story, rising from a drug-infested Brooklyn project to become an award-winning rapper with a highly successful clothing line. He married multi-platinum-winning actress and singer Beyoncé Knowles in 2008.
During the course of their union, the famous couple has dominated the media with their various successful business ventures and gossip, sometimes salacious.
Carter’s legal representatives issued the following statement: “Defendant Shawn Carter (aka “JAY-Z”) has built an impeccable reputation. He has never been accused of, let alone engaged in, any sexual misconduct.”
The Carter/Knowles marriage has produced three children, the oldest being daughter Blue Ivy, who at 12 years old is the same age as the alleged victim was when the assault took place. Her father alluded to this in a personal statement denying his involvement.
“My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims, and explain the cruelty and greed of people,” he said. “I mourn yet another loss of innocence.”
In a related incident, Carter’s mother-in-law, Tina Knowles, noticed a “like” post relating to the accusations on her social media account. She deleted the offending entry and noted her own rebuttal on an Instagram account, insisting that she was “hacked.”
She cautioned against further internet slander, paraphrasing a biblical phrase from Isaiah 54:17: “Please stop playing with me!!!! No weapon formed against my family shall prosper.” Carter’s lawyer, celebrity attorney to the stars Alex Spiro, has asked the judge to reveal the plaintiff’s identity, provided she continues with these legal proceedings.
