Several graduates of the Pathways Entrepreneurship Program, a training program for male and female high school students of color, received scholarships at Sunday’s 100 Black Men of Los Angeles’ Young Black Scholars (YBS) class of 2022 Celebration of Achievement.

The event, “Achieving Success, One Step at a Time,” was held at West LA College and also included several awards for the Junior Investment cohort, the Lawndale School Mentoring cohort and the YBS graduating class.

“This is our thirty-second graduation for our graduating seniors,” said 100 Black Men of Los Angeles (100BMLA) president Kirk Williams as he kicked off the event.

YBS began as a solution to the 1983 California PostSecondary Education Commission (CPSEC) study, which indicated an alarming number of African-American students who did not meet the University of California school system entrance requirements upon high school graduation.

The pilot phase of Young Black Scholars targeted a group of promising ninth graders throughout Los Angeles. The program tracked these students and provided them with a series of academic workshops, enrichment activities, and support services to augment their preparation for college. Upon graduation from high school, more than 70 percent of the students met or exceeded national standards for college admissions.

Networking and relationship-building are also part of the organization’s programs for student participants. Leaders assess students’ career aspirations, goals, soft skills, strengths, growth opportunities, and the program goals they would like to achieve.

Throughout the Los Angeles area, over 170 high schools and 1,000 students, in grades nine through 12, are involved in YBS.

Students who complete an application, available at https://www.100bmla.net/ybs and are selected for the program, will be invited to attend an orientation and overview where components, guidelines, expectations, requirements, and outcomes will be reviewed with participants and parents. Most classes will be conducted on the campus of West Los Angeles College, while others will be conducted on the campus of Loyola Marymount University.
