To address growing physician shortage

Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science is one of four medical institutions in LA County to receive part of $3.2 million from L.A. Care Health Plan in support of 25 residency positions.
According to the nation’s largest publicly operated health plan, the grants are part of its efforts to address a growing physician shortage.
The organization cited an Association of American Medical Colleges report from last year that found the nation is facing a shortage of up to 139,000 physicians by 2033, confirming figures included in a previous UC San Francisco report that showed California is especially vulnerable.
The grants will also support residency positions starting in fall 2022 at White Memorial Medical Center Charitable Foundation, AltaMed Health ServicesCorporation, and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
“Recent research shows that the majority of physicians will stay and practice in the city where they completed their residency,’’ John Baackes, CEO of L.A. Care, said in a statement. “By creating more residency positions in L.A. County, we will help ensure that L.A. Care members always have access to high quality care.’’
