The Los Angeles City Council held a moment of silence Tuesday for the over 400,000 people in the U.S. and about 14,000 people in Los Angeles County who have died of coronavirus-related complications during the pandemic.
“This pandemic has been so difficult, and many of our families are mourning their loved ones,” City Council President Nury Martinez said before adjourning Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
She said the incoming Biden administration asked cities and towns to participate in a national memorial to honor the lives lost to the pandemic. Los Angeles City Hall will be lit in honor of the victims Tuesday night.
“We are hopeful that the new administration will bring an end to this pandemic,” Martinez said.
U.S. coronavirus deaths surpassed 400,000 on Tuesday, and over 100,000 of those deaths occurred in the last five weeks. President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will speak at 2:30 p.m. PST at the Lincoln Memorial’s reflecting pool to honor those who died of COVID-19.
