Sign-ups begin for Section 8 lottery


The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles is accepting applications through 5 p.m. Oct. 29 for the Section 8 Waiting List Lottery. The Section 8 program provides rental assistance to eligible individuals and families by paying a portion of rent directly to private landlords.

The on-line applications may be submitted 24 hours a day, seven days a week, via smart phone, mobile device or a computer with Internet access by visiting Applicants who need assistance in applying because of a disability may call (213) 205-5585 or, toll free, (888) 816-6955. There is no cost to submit an application, nor will an applicant be asked for any advance payment.

The following information must be provided during the application process:

—An e-mail address (to create an e-mail account, go to,, or receive assistance from your local library;

—The name of the head of household, his/her date of birth, current address and mailing location, telephone number, and social security number or alien registration (if he/she has one);

—The name of a spouse or co-head of the household (if applicable), his/her date of birth, current address, telephone number, social security number or alien registration number (if he/she has one);

—Total number of persons (yourself included) expected to live at the residence;

—Your household’s total annual income from all sources.

Also, have a paper and pen ready to write down the confirmation number of the submitted application for the lottery (you will also receive an e-mail with this information).

All interested and eligible low-income households are encouraged to apply. A preference for housing assistance will be given to applicants who reside, work or have been hired to work in the city of Los Angeles, and also to applicants who are veterans or have a household member who is a veteran of the U.S. military, released from such military services under conditions other than dishonorable.
