Sir Sidney Poitier, American-born Bahamian actor, film director, author, and diplomat was born on February 20, 1927.
In 1963, Poitier became the first Black person to win an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in “Lilies of the Field.”
The significance of this achievement was later bolstered in 1967 when he starred in three successful films: “To Sir, with Love;” “In the Heat of the Night;” and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” making him the top box-office star of that year. In all three films, issues revolve around the race of the characters Poitier portrays.

Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris delivered the city’s annual State of the City Address to the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce at the Hellenic Center in Lancaster this week. During the presentation, Parris shared that the city has made fantastic strides over the past year in a number of areas. By targeting basic societal needs first, then elevating efforts to more grandiose advancements, the city has been able to effectively address issues ranging from crime, health and education to infrastructure, entertainment and economic development.

More than 60 years before the popularity of the A&E reality show “Duck Dynasty,” Ducks Unlimited has served as the world’s largest and most effective private waterfowl and wetlands conservation organization. Antelope Valley Ducks Unlimited on March 14 will host its annual banquet and auction from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, 2551 West Avenue H, Lancaster.

Los Angeles native and El Monte resident Rafael González has been selected as Director of the Best Start Communities Department at First 5 LA. As Director, González will lead a department of 28 in First 5 LA’s ongoing work to support young children and their parents in 14 communities across Los Angeles County.
