Najee Ali, executive director of Project Islamic Hope, and a coalition of African American activists held a Confederate flag-burning ceremony on June 23 to rally in support of South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who called for the removal of the Confederate flag from the grounds of the State Capitol. The rally took place at the intersection of Crenshaw and King boulevards, on the Walmart side.

Opening ceremony held to celebrate Juneteenth’s 150th anniversary
Metro employees, including board member Jacquelyn Dupont-Walker and Interim Deputy CEO Stephanie Wiggins, joined members of Metro’s African American Employee Association (AAEA) on June 1—in a ceremony outside of Metro headquarters—to kick off a month of celebration for the upcoming 150th Juneteenth anniversary on June 19.
L.A. food bank begins summer meal program
The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank this week kicked off its 10th Annual Summer Meal Program. The program, which has nearly doubled in size in the past three years, provides access to nutritious meals for disadvantaged children. It will run until school resumes, giving lunches to children who would normally have their afternoon meal at school, according to a recent press release.
Dads embark on 2,100-mile bike ride
The 21st Century Dads Foundation has set off for their grueling, inaugural Dads Honor Ride to support local charities helping fathers to be more active in their children’s lives. The 21-day, 2,100 mile bike-ride is from Los Angeles to Chicago and concludes on Father’s Day.
LAUSD’s “reconstitution” breaks promise to Obama Global Prep, UTLA says
The Los Angeles Unified School District is trying to “reconstitute” Barack Obama Global Preparation Academy—a change that will directly impact students. The reconstitution forces educators to reapply for their jobs, which will further destabilize the under-supported and under-funded school, according to a press release from United Teachers Los Angeles. After summer break, when classes resume, students may find their favorite teachers are gone.
