Cobi Jones is still giving back 21-years later

The LA Galaxy played their first match 21-years ago, earning a 2-1 win over the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. During that game, Cobi Jones scored the winner in front of a packed house of anxious fans at the Rose Bowl.
The first player allocated to the team in club history, the UCLA product was part of an elite class of Americans playing overseas who returned home to help boost the launch of Major League Soccer. And he delivered indeed.

WNBA champions L.A. Sparks post 2017 preseason schedule

Reigning WNBA Champion Los Angeles Sparks announced its 2017 preseason schedule. Preseason tip off will have the Sparks on the road on May 2, for a 2 p.m. game at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut. The champs will then face the Connecticut Sun at the same arena Wednesday, May 3 at 4 p.m.
Following their road trip, the Sparks will head home to an L.A. location yet to be announced against the San Antonio Stars on Saturday, May 6 at 4 p.m.

Serena Williams, Muhammad Ali will receive Jesse Owens awards

The International Athletic Association (IAA) has announced tennis superstar Serena Williams and transcendent boxer and cultural icon Muhammad Ali have been selected to receive the 2017 Jesse Owens Awards.
The prestigious awards recognize sports legends who exemplify the ideals embodied by the Olympian and humanitarian Jesse Owens: integrity, perseverance and service.

USC standout Adoree’ Jackson skips senior season for NFL

USC cornerback Adoree’ Jackson will forgo his senior season and declare for the NFL draft. He was one of the most electric players in college football during his three-year tenure with the Trojans. Jackson waited until right up to the Jan. 16 deadline to declare for early entry into the draft, but most expected he would come out after a very good junior season. He’s the third USC underclassmen to enter the draft, joining receiver Smith Schuster and guard Damien Mama.

LA D-Fenders become South Bay Lakers

The Los Angeles D-Fenders will change their name following its 2016-17 season to the South Bay Lakers, according to a recent announcement by the team.
The re-branding will more closely align the affiliate with the Lakers in hopes of achieving greater visibility for the NBA Development League franchise. It’s not a stretch since the team has been owned by the L.A. Lakers since 2006.
