BET attempts to share genius in Los Angeles

The BET Awards and BET Experience returned to Los Angeles this weekend for a complete takeover of the L.A. Convention Center and L.A. Live. The awards took place on Sunday June 29, but the BET Experience, which was free to the public, was held from Friday through Sunday. The BET Experience featured events such as celebrity meet and greets, streetball and celebrity basketball games, dance competitions and live performances. But among all the festivities, the Genius Talks seminars seemed to offer the most substance; however, these seminars were the least popular among attendees.

CAAM celebrates Black Music Month with free show

On Sunday, the California African American Museum (CAAM) hosted a free concert outside its doors in Exposition Park to celebrate Black Music Month and the 100th anniversary of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), the non-profit organization charged with protecting the artistic copyrights of its members. CAAM collaborated with Target as well as ASCAP’s Rhythm and Soul department to orchestrate the event.

Bob Olmsted: Ending cronyism key to reform

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s election is rapidly approaching and Bob Olmsted says he is more than ready. In a recent interview, the candidate pointed out three main issues he will focus on immediately, if elected to office: auditing police spending, jail overcrowding, and most importantly, fixing the broken hierarchy in the chain of command in the LASD. The latter will not only repair the damage created by some of the current and previous negligent actions, but will also help improve the department’s image in the public eye.

United We Stand Festival a huge success

On Saturday May 10, the Free & Equal Election Foundation hosted the United We Stand Festival at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles. The festival was initially scheduled to be held at the UCLA campus, but was changed at the last minute. Nevertheless, supporters of all ages gathered to be a part of the event which was designed to encourage young people to become more involved with politics.

Dorsey alum Sherlett Hendy-Newbill: dedication to her community

It seems as though Sherlett Hendy-Newbill was born to run for the LAUSD District 1 seat. Reared in the heart of District 1, she attended Dorsey High School and developed an everlasting love and respect for her community. After graduating from college and returning home, she became active in the community, coaching girls basketball at Dorsey and involving herself as a Lead Teacher in one of the school’s innovative small learning academies. Through this program, Newbill gained the experience necessary to develop scholastic curriculum and other programs that were designed to improve youth learning. Newbill also involved herself with teaching at the Thacher School for five years in a program known as Teach the Teachers. This program was designed to educate physical education instructors about better ways to teach physical education in school and how to encourage healthier lifestyles.
