On Saturday, September 20, 2025, NBA Hall of Famer and Lakers icon Michael “Coop” Cooper will join Compton’s own Lonzo Williams, legendary hip-hop pioneer, to lead the 6th Annual Prostate Cancer Run/Walk at Compton College.

Cooper, inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2024 and celebrated as a cornerstone of the Lakers’ “Showtime” era, will appear from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM to greet the community, deliver an inspiring message on the importance of early detection, and officially kick off the event.

“Prostate cancer has touched too many men I know,” said Cooper. “If we catch it early, we can beat it. We can save more lives. This event is about showing up for yourself, your family, and your community.”

Williams, founder of the Compton Entertainment Chamber of Commerce and host of the event, brings his own personal mission: to make prostate health an everyday conversation in Black communities that face disproportionately high risks.

A Movement Beyond Fitness
This year’s Run/Walk is more than a fitness challenge—it’s a life-saving movement. Prostate cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer death among men in the U.S., and Black men are 70 percent more likely to be diagnosed and twice as likely to die from the disease.

The event aims to raise $100,000 to support local cancer education, free prostate screening programs, and outreach initiatives that provide men with the resources they need for early detection and treatment.
