Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) proved this week–again–that the Democratic Party’s leadership is stuck in a time warp, still acting like their base is made up of polite, NPR-listening boomers who just want civility and compromise. Meanwhile, the actual Democratic electorate has shifted—like much of society. Younger Gen Xers, Millennials and Gen Z—now a major part of the base—grew up watching Republicans bulldoze every norm, from the Tea Party to Trump, and we’re done with the “when they go low, we go high” nonsense.

This isn’t 1996. The base isn’t looking for kumbaya moments with people who think their existence is up for debate. We’re looking for leaders who fight. We want clapbacks, not caution. We want receipts, not respectability. The MAGA base is out here treating politics like a blood sport, and Democratic leaders are still acting like they’re presiding over a Rotary Club meeting.

The energy has changed. The stakes have changed. But too many at the top still think they’re leading a flock of folks their own age, when the real Democratic base is younger, more diverse, and ready to throw hands—politically speaking, of course.
