Tyler Perry does an amazing job with his TV shows depicting the Black experience from many different lenses. His show “Bruh” follows four Black men navigating the transition from young men to grown men, life struggles, love, and being a Black man in America. Cast members discuss their characters, life on and off the set, and what’s upcoming for season 4.
“Mike realized that while he has friends, he never leaned on them or asked for help when he needed it the most. He used quick fixes to get through his troubling times,” Phillip Mullings Jr., who plays Mike Alexander on the show, said about his character development from season one to season four. “ I feel like once he realized he couldn’t live life in a vacuum, he started to open up, and that caused the drastic shift in himself.”
Another character who plays a major role in Mike’s shift from selfish and egotistical to loving and caring is his love interest, Pamela, played by Alyssa Goss. “ I think at the beginning, she was trying to tell herself she wanted something casual with Mike but realized she had way more feelings for him as time went on, subsequently ignoring the red flags Mike presented her,” Goss said, describing Pamela and Mike’s relationship and how it started to change her. “Pam was going along for the ride with Mike through his ups and downs, but by season four, you can see her getting a backbone, seeing her worth, and standing on business, which excited me and had me screaming finally!”
Multi-talented entertainer Chandra Currelley, who plays Alice, the mother of Barry Brewster’s character John Watts, talked about working with people from different generations and longevity in acting. “ It’s been truly a blessing for me because it has kept me relevant, and when I connect with younger cast members, we give each other nourishment and knowledge, which has contributed greatly to my longevity.” Currelley has worked with Tyler Perry since 2003 in on-screen work and plays. “Currelley’s character Alice provides comedic relief to the show but also shows the struggles of being a single parent raising a son.
Monti Washington plays Bill Fraizer, a character experiencing a change of guard in his love life. “Bill embodies the different phrases males go through in life. You have the boy phase, young man phase, then grown man phase, and you see the different examples in his love life.” Bill’s love life starts with rekindling his past relationship with Regnia (played by Candice Renee), but by season four, Bill wants no dealings with her. “You see the mental and emotional back and forth happening inside Bill throughout the show, but in season four, you see him come to terms with himself about where he’s at in life and what he wants to do.”
Other characters on the show are Mahdi Cocci who portrays Tom Brooks, and Shawn Vaughn as Greg Hunter. Bruh is available to watch on BET+ with new episodes airing every Thursday.
