Although Pride month was in June along with many celebrations, the month of July wouldn’t be complete without South LA’s celebration of Pride. This week, South LA is gearing up to host their 6th Annual South LA Pride event on Saturday, July 13. This year’s event will take place from noon until 8 p.m at the Michelle and Barack Obama Sports Complex in the Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Michelle and Barack Obama Sports Complex is located at 5001 Obama Blvd. The event is free and open to the public.
“South LA Pride is more than just a celebration, it’s a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of our community,” said Jasmyne Cannick, director of South LA Pride. “We are proud to create a space where everyone can come together to celebrate diversity and be their authentic selves in their own community. It’s giving to the community.”
South LA Pride is organized by members of South LA’s LGBTQ+ community, this year’s co-chairs are Ray Love Jr. and Queen Shannon Gipson. Attendees are welcome to bring blankets and lawn chairs, pack a picnic lunch, and find a comfy spot on the grass in the Jackie Robinson Stadium to enjoy the festivities. Food trucks will be available with tasty options for purchase. This year’s theme is “It’s Giving” and is a popular term used to describe someone or something that exudes confidence, charisma and authenticity. South LA Pride will be headlined by R&B sensation JeRonelle. The musical line-up will include live performances with rappers such as Billy The Goat, boysloveflowers, R&B singing duet Sunday, disco funk artist Javi, alternative music artist Topez Faerie and Luna Scar and dancers.
South LA Pride is not only a declaration of individuality and inclusivity but a hotbed for fun activities and events. Beginning at 11 a.m. there will be free yoga with WalkGoodLA, followed by a softball game hosted by the Greater Los Angeles Softball Association at 2 p.m. Outside Kiki Ball will be a colorful and lively parade featuring local organizations, community groups and allies marching in support of LGBTQ+ rights.
Additionally, there will be a vendor village marketplace featuring queer owned and friendly South Los Angeles businesses and a resource fair with a variety of booths and resources provided by local organizations offering support, information, and services for the LGBTQ+ community.
