Re-entry into society can be a daunting and difficult task for those coming out of incarceration. Luckily for South Los Angeles residents, there are several programs anxiously waiting to assist individuals re-entering society. One program that offers several services to veterans and parolees is Inglewood 2nd Call. Inglewood 2nd Call is located at 9550 Crenshaw Blvd. in Inglewood.
Inglewood 2nd Call is a non-profit organization. The organization was founded in 2020 by CEO, Jason Rugley. Rugley is an Inglewood native and was formerly incarcerated and headed down the wrong path, but thankfully has since turned his life around for the better. Rugley is also a former veteran and has experience working in maintenance and construction. He attended both Homeboy Industries and South Los Angeles 2nd Call and upon seeing the work that was done to assist various people, was inspired to start a similar facility.
Rugley says, “There is a South LA 2nd Call that I went through so I knew it worked. It was in my heart to start one in my community which is Inglewood. When I saw what 2nd Call was doing for people-getting them these great jobs–I gave it a shot and it worked out for me!”
Inglewood 2nd Call not only assists with re-entry and veterans, but also helps people with drug addiction and facing domestic violence situations. Inglewood 2nd Call offers life-skill classes, court-mandated classes, parenting classes and gang intervention and prevention resources for the community. Rugley says there are several things that can lead young people to join gangs. Two main contributing factors are a lack of a male figure in the home and poverty. Rugley hopes to see many individuals looking to change their lives participating in courses and visiting the organization for resources. He says, “The street code is hard to break. You know for men to be able to express themselves. I’m trying to let the world know it’s okay for a man to express themselves.”
Additionally, the facility offers union-based construction jobs for those looking for work after incarceration. A recent food drive was just held in the month of April, Rugley has even given and donated from his own pockets to ensure that people in need are provided with food and resources. Rugley is passionate about entrepreneurship and is quick to inspire anyone beginning a career to dream bigger and do what it is they love for a living. Like many nonprofits, funding can be challenging and create barriers in terms of expansion.
