Literacy is an important skill for adults, but even more so for children as it helps to shape their vision of the world around them. With the advancement of technology, reading, and literacy have become a daunting task for parents of young children. Luckily, institutions such as the Willie Agee Playhouse consider literacy an essential skill and have a wonderful event that emphasizes it. This Saturday, July 13, the Willie Agee Playhouse is hosting a community summer children’s storytime and book sale & exchange event. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Willie Agee Playhouse is located at 714 Warren Lane in Inglewood.
The event is designed to inspire reading, imagination, literacy, and an appreciation for poetry and theater. The event is open to all ages and will consist of storytelling, theater games, and snacks. Attendees are welcome to bring in old books in exchange for new ones. Children authors participating in the event include; Andrea Lee (“Cooking with Little Chef Lee”), Lorenzo Frank (“Nzinga Teaches/Learns a Lesson”), Denise Lyles-Cook (“What’s Wrong With My…?”), Clint ‘Saint’ Johnson (“Young Lions: Faith Walker”), Rasheeda Jones (“Justice”), Bunny Meighan(“Oh Charles Brand”), and Aiyisha Sinclair (“Brown Sugar Fairies: Saroja’s Quest”). These award-winning authors will read from their bestselling children’s books and poetry. Audience participation is encouraged.
Shelli Boone, Artistic Director of the Playhouse said, “I am so excited and proud to be bringing this event back for another year with my co-chair Lynne Conner. This year we have more authors and more fun to be had! We both believe that we must teach the youth how important books are, especially in this technology age. We hope to encourage and foster a love of reading, not only during the school year but during the summer months and beyond.”
