The Los Angeles Housing Department (LAHD) announced that the California state, “Housing Is Key,” rent relief program will be accepting applications until March 31. This program’s mission is to provide free financial assistance to landlords and renters who are behind on rent and utility bills due to COVID-19.
Income-eligible applicants may qualify for the program regardless of immigration status and won’t be asked to show proof of citizenship. Assistance from this program will not count as earned income and will not affect other benefit assistance programs, such as CalWorks or CalFresh.
Both the executive director of the L.A. County Development Authority and the director of the Department of Consumer and Business Affairs urge people to apply for the Rent Relief program before 5 p.m. on March 31. They will also have zoom interviews in both English and Spanish to better explain how residents can benefit from the program and how to apply.
Emilio Salas, of the Development Authority will hold interviews from 9 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8; and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday March 10.
Rafael Carbajal, of Consumer and Business Affairs will hold interviews from 9 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9; and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16.
