Shop South LA on Valentines

After remembering to purchase that obligatory Valentine’s Day card for that significant other at the local convenience store, one may be surprised to learn there is a variety of abundant shopping available nearby in the Slauson Avenue area of Windsor Hills/View Park.

Unique holiday gifts can be found at Cultural Interiors, 4421 W. Slauson Ave., where Gail Hawkins has gathered up finds from across the globe.

Her idea is to bring character and prestige to living spaces, with accents of the Caribbean, West Africa, Japan, Mexico, South America, China, Indonesia or East India.

“We also offer reupholstery services,” Hawkins said. “If you want to give your home a unique touch.”

In addition to home decor, kitchen items, bath soaps, art, incense and trinkets to sprinkle around the living room, Cultural Interiors features an array of jewelry items, including handmade, telephone wire crafted African spirit earrings, necklaces of multicolored stones and wooden bracelets.

There is also a jewelry store housed within its walls called Jendayi Collection  – a staple in the jewelry business community for its culturally inspired designs.

To find extraordinary boutique clothing items for women, visit C.J.’s Elegance at 4446 W. Slauson. Owner Carol Shaw caters to a clientele who eschew the regular department stores. They do not wish to dress like everyone else.

Known for being extremely unique and timeless, C.J.’s has been in business  since 1969. Just next door is C.J. 2, With Love, for the younger, contemporary set.

Nearby is a gallery space available for local artists at 3718 Slauson Ave., where creatives curate their creations on a regular basis. For more information, call (323) 299.1141. The art gallery has special covid hours, so RSVPs are strongly encouraged.

Up and down both sides of the street are a variety of stores to choose from: Kutula by Africana, which offers fashions inspired by the MotherLand;  Loc Love Salon; One of a Kind Hats, Copies Plus, May’s Skin and Body Treatment; Pamper You Products; W.H. Sharpening Service; Windsor Hills Wine & Spirits;  Ambiance by Bernadette; International Beauty Supply; Skylar Nail Spa; and Mr. Kits Barbering.

After a day of Valentines browsing and shopping, it is time to find dinner. Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen is a Black-owned restaurant offering a wi-fi cafe for the local community. It also offers locally roasted gourmet coffee, cold-pressed juices, and all-day breakfast and lunch.

Established in 2018, owners Yonnie Hagos and Ajay Relan spent their formative years in this community.

Of course, they aren’t the only eateries in the area. Don’t miss Orleans and York for some soul food; Crustees, for a unique selection of savory and sweet pot pies; Jon & Vinny’s Slauson, a new spot which opened in November and features Italian food; Jerusalem Chicken, which serves Halal Palistinian food; Sachi Teriyaki House, Puerto Nuevo restaurant, Giti Thai restaurant, or Simply Wholesome, an anchor in the neighborhood, offering good-for-you fare along with a health food store. And then, of course, there’s Snowball for desert and La Lousianne at 5812 Overhill Dr. for live jazz and a Cajin dinner.

Plan it just right, and this neighborhood can deliver a sweet Valentines Day.
