Have you checked out Bishop T.D. Jakes’ new talk show on OWN? It is a powerful heartwarming and interesting look at the human condition and how we learn to cope, fight, and get past the darkness.

Most people understandably think Jakes’ talk show is faith-based because of his popularity in the pulpit. He is one of the nation’s most influential spiritual leaders, and the senior pastor of the Potter’s House, a global humanitarian organization and 30,000-member church located in Dallas, Texas.

But, Jakes assures us that the topics are in the same ballpark as the other talk shows i.e. domestic violence, human trafficking, marital problems, house husbands, conflict resolutions and even celebrity appearances from time to time. But Jakes, who is also the producer of the show brings his own flavor to it. He says, “I am a person of faith, and when I sit down all of that sits down at the table with me.”

Jakes continued, “This is not TBN.  This is not a faith-based show.  We want to deal with all aspects of human experience.”  Jakes told one reporter that he aims to give viewers the kind of discussion show “that mainstream America is hungry for” but rarely gets in daytime anymore.  He continued, “Today, more and more, shows seem to want the sizzle instead of any substance. I don’t know if this trend is dictated by the CEOs who control the networks or if it’s coming from the demand of the people. But I believe it’s possible to tackle tough issues in a serious way on mainstream television and still make it entertaining. That’s something I want to explore.”

T.D. Jakes, a best-selling author and a visionary thought leader, is a “down-to-earth” speaker.  His entertaining wit and signature wisdom will help viewers navigate critical issues of our times. If you’ve ever heard him preach, you know he will be ‘keeping it real’ on his groundbreaking talk show.

He talks to people, not at them. The show will deliver social audiences original and interactive content experiences across Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and more.

He says “I’m proud to do what I do on Sunday mornings. But this is more along the lines of what I do the remainder of the week: counseling parishioners and working to solve problems in the community.

The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) acquired the rights to air the hour-long syndicated talk show hosted by the pastor from TEGNA Media and T.D. Jakes Enterprises. Currently the “T.D. Jakes Talk Show” is airing back to back in Los Angeles at 2 and 3pm Monday through Friday.

“Oprah and OWN have a wonderful, long-running relationship with Bishop Jakes,” OWN president Erik Logan said recently in a statement. “We are thrilled to welcome his new talk show and unique, inspirational voice to the OWN family.”

Said Jakes: “Oprah Winfrey is an icon and a business mogul who has become a national treasure impacting our nation with her creativity. I consider her a personal friend and I’m honored to have her support of my new show.”

The goal is to have content and a tone reminiscent of the Oprah and Dr. Phil shows.  It’s worth noting that Jakes was a familiar face on both of those programs over the years. “I learned a lot from them, just from observing them as they worked,” he says.

I was able to catch a show with Bishop T.D. Jakes on the Dr. Phil Show.  I noticed the difference in how they approached a young couple that was having serious marital issues. Dr. Phil was tough talking, and basically condemning the wayward husband on the spot. He offered the young man professional help to get him back on track. Bishop Jakes on the other hand engaged in a conversation with the young husband that was more ‘soul-searching’ and the young man was forced to admit to some negative, unnecessary behavior towards his wife. And he issued a heartfelt apology to his wife. Two different approaches, with both agreeing the couple was not ready to reunite.
