Since it was first built in 1947, the former Broadway Department store in the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza has been occupied by one tenant. But with the closure of the last occupant of the historic store, (Wal-Mart), the owners of the first shopping mall on the West Coast, Capri Capital, have decided to lease the five-level retail space to multiple tenants rather than a single store, according to facility general manager Rachel Freeman.
There is a lot of interest in what is available and a number of national retailers are excited to get a foothold in the market served by the mall, said Freeman.
Although she would not detail specifically who she is talking with, Freeman pointed generally to apparel retailers, fast food and casual dining eateries and entertainment that could compliment the theaters already in the mall.
While people have signed on the dotted line or made other similar commitments, Freeman said she is not at liberty to name names or even give dates.
