SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Several people were shot when gunfire rang out on the campus of Santa Monica College today, and the suspect was apparently wounded.

The shooting erupted around noon near the middle of the campus at 1900 Pico Blvd.

A campus employee told City News Service two gunshots were initially heard, followed by what sounded like dozens of additional shots.

The campus was placed on lockdown while SMC and Santa Monica police swarmed the campus, focusing on the library, where some of the shooting apparently occurred.

Unconfirmed reports from the scene indicated that a suspect was down in the library, and as many as three people were shot.

The shooting occurred just miles from the set of a Democratic National Committee fundraiser attended by President Barack Obama.
