The California Black Chamber of Commerce (CBCC) will host its 13th annual Ron Brown Commerce Summit and Awards Gala Aug. 21-23 at the Westin Los Angeles Airport Hotel, and this year the focus is on youth entrepreneurs.
Among the highlights of the event are the launch of CBCC Foundation’s Jr. Black Chamber of Commerce, Aug. 21 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; a scholarship golf tournament, Aug. 21 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. A youth entrepreneurial summit, Aug. 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m; a workshop designed to offer business owners information on up-to-date technology solutions; a workshop on wealth creation Aug. 23 from 8:30 to 10 a.m; as well as an opening session Aug. 22 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. to help entrepreneurs understand what “going green” means as well as the impact this will have on communities, and the new business opportunities available.
The cost to attend the full conference ranges from $40 for youth 18 to 25 to $350 for non members. Individuals interested in attending can also pick and choose the activities to attend by visiting the chamber Web site at www.calbcc.org. (Look under CBCC foundation event.)
This year’s focus is on helping youth ages 18 to 25 develop business ideas. And during the youth entrepreneurial summit, participants will share their successes, learn about business planning, financial literacy as well as life and social skills.
The CBCC Foundation is launching the Junior Black Chamber of Commerce in an effort to educate young people about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through education programs, role models, mentoring opportunities and hands-on training.
The new chamber is targeting youth who live in low-income communities throughout the state, and the ultimate goal is to decrease unemployment among African American males.
At the launch, the chamber plans to bring 500 young people together and select regional representatives, then the attendees will begin to learn some of the business basics. These include how to develop a business plan; financial literacy in your business and personal affairs, and how to successfully market a business on the Internet.
Once participants learn the basics, they will have the opportunity to participate in a business plan competition.
In addition to the youth entrepreneurial activities, 20 young people–both college and high school students–will each receive $1,000 scholarships from the CBCC at the annual awards banquet. John “Hope” Bryant is the keynote speaker for this program.
