Scientists gathering data in Sequoia National Park are seeing unprecedented signs of stress in the ancient trees, some of which are 3,000 years old. Now scientists, ecologists, park service workers and visitors are paying close attention to see if there is any cause for alarm among some of the true natural wonders of world as the Giant Sequoias are beginning to show the effects of the dry weather.

Lackey backs Bouquet Creek cleanup
Assemblyman Tom Lackey (R-Palmdale) has introduced AB353 that promises to expedite the cleaning of Bouquet Creek near Santa Clarita. If the legislation is signed by Gov. Jerry Brown, county workers would receive special permission to begin restoring the creek and reintroduce its inhabitants such as the endangered threespine stickleback fish.
Smith leaves with ‘Key to City’
The Lancaster City Council presented outgoing Councilmember Ron Smith with the Key to the City. Smith, who has resigned, was elected to the council in 2006 after having served five years on the Lancaster Planning commission, four years of which he served as chairman.

Saving lives at 18 of the world’s suicide ‘hot spots’
Since the Golden Gate Bridge was built in San Francisco in 1937, more than 1,600 people have jumped off it and died. The bridge is one of many sites around the world that are considered suicide hot spots because people use them frequently to take their own lives.
A new analysis suggests that several different types of interventions could help reduce the risk of suicide at these hot spots, typically bridges, cliffs or other high places.

A new Children’s Institute campus is scheduled to be built in Watts. Frank Gehry, the internationally acclaimed architect known for the Disney Concert Hall in Downtown Los Angeles and the Getty Museum in West Los Angeles, has signed on to design the $35 million center set for groundbreaking in 2018.
State schools chief appoints fourth administrator to Inglewood schools
Vincent Matthews, Ed.D., has become the fourth State Administrator in three years appointed to take control of the Inglewood Unified School District since the state department of education took charge of the district in October of 2012 in exchange for an emergency loan of up to $55 million.
