An exciting line up of some of the most popular acts in music and comedy will appear this fall at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center.
First up on Sept. 8 is comedian and variety show host Howie Mandel. The Canadian-born funnyman arrived in Los Angeles in 1979 on an ordinary business trip, but he passed by the Comedy Store in West Hollywood and decided to try out for amateur night.

Thug Messiah: The myth and legend of Tupac Shakur
Andy Warhol’s prediction that everyone will have their 15 minutes of fame is proven true. The explosion of the internet and social media has produced scores of celebrated nobodies, people who’ve achieved notoriety for the simple fact that they are well known.
As with everything, celebrity has its own hierarchy, but true celebrity arguably has staying power. For the droves of “celebutantes” (a portmanteau of the words “celebrity” and “débutante”) like Paris Hilton or Nicole Ritchie (who are “famous for being famous”), there are the select few whose renown transcends time and the longevity of tabloid and scandal sheets. Those whose eminence (or infamy) extends past even the physical plane include Elvis (Presley), Prince, (Princess) Diana, Che (Guevara), Bob Marley, and Michael Jackson.
Black soldiers for Donald Trump ready to defend their chosen man
In the midst of stifling heat and perpetual foot traffic, hundreds of enraged protesters swarmed Hollywood Boulevard. Each participant had a message for our nation’s outspoken president.
“F**k Donald Trump!” one of them yelled. “Trump’s a fascist pig!” shouted another. “Assassinate the president!” screamed one more.
To describe the environment as bedlam would be a colossal understatement. It was a steamy, sticky Saturday afternoon, and emotions ran even hotter.
The howling continued: “Deport Melania Trump!” “Trump’s a Russian spy!” “No Trump, No KKK, No Fascist USA!”

Homelessness and housing insecurity among former prisoners
It’s not a secret. The rate of homelessness in Los Angeles surpasses nearly every major city in the country.
If you need an example, visit Downtown and travel the grimy streets littered with dozens of poverty-stricken castaways. Military veterans account for a large share of those living in tents under freeways and on street corners throughout the city. However, in recent years, the sting of homelessness has unleashed its wrath on young African American males, particularly those with a criminal past.

Medical issues among African Americans encourage doctors to discover solutions
Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital in Watts is taking bold steps to break through the barriers to good health within the African American community. And there is good reason why this proactive stance is so important, because the Black community—nationwide—has been witness to some of the worst health outcomes of any population. Officials at King Hospital are trying to remedy that situation by focusing on preventative measures that, they believe, will not only shine a light on historic health disparities in South Los Angeles, but also foster a better sense of health ownership and well-being.

Moving sports franchises has differing effects on local Black businesses
Folks in Oakland have something to smile about—the Golden State Warriors reclaiming the NBA championship—and something to be sad about—the Oakland Raiders heading to Las Vegas.
But even Oakland’s NBA championship has its downside. Plans are underway to move the team out of Oakland and into San Francisco.
