On Tuesday, a suspect was taken into custody and held on $1 million bail for allegedly shooting and injuring three of his co-workers at an assisted living facility in South Los Angeles.
Darryl Barnes, 60, the head of maintenance at Progressive Home for the Elderly, was the shooter, said Ronald Golden, an overnight security guard at the facility.
The shooting took place around 10:50 a.m. Monday in the lobby of the building at 7010 Denver Ave., the Los Angeles Police Department said. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department inmate records indicate Barnes was arrested by officers from the LAPD 77th Street Division and is currently being held at Van Nuys Regional Jail, in lieu of $1 million, on suspicion of committing a felony.
The victims of the shooting were taken to a hospital, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). One was in critical condition, and the other two were stable, the LAPD said. Police described the victims only as a man in his 60s and two women, one in her 40s and the other in her 70s. Golden confirmed that all three victims were alive as of 3:55 a.m. Tuesday.
No shots were fired when the suspect was taken into custody, police said. LAPD declined to confirm the identity of the suspect. Police said the victims and the suspect were all staff members at the facility.
Police also did not immediately release details about a possible motive, but witnesses told reporters the shooter was a custodian at the facility. Police said the suspect was a man in his 60s. Officers checked all of the building’s residents to make sure they were not injured. The facility resumed normal operations, though residents of the facility were ” traumatized ” by the shooting, Golden said. He added that the facility had recorded footage of the shooting from security cameras.
