President Trump’s agenda of redistricting congressional maps, through a redraw in Texas to gain 5 more Republican seats in the GOP, was challenged as Democratic voters approved Proposition 50 on Tuesday, Nov. 4. A monumental move for California Democrats, voters utilized their rights and backed Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan to redraw congressional districts in favor of the Democratic Party. The special campaign, while critics have suggested it was risky of Newsom, proved successful.

“Instead of agonizing over the state of our nation, we organized in an unprecedented way,” said Newsom.

According to calmatters.org, Proposition 50 is one of the most costly ballot measures in the state’s history, as the measure received over $120 million from supporters of Newsom’s committee. $44 million was raised by opponents of the measure, and other outside groups garnered $27 million to try to sweep the measure’s voting reach.

President Donald Trump expressed his disdain in a fiery response on a social media post with four words, “… AND SO IT BEGINS!” After, President Trump began to demand election reform and repeatedly called for the filibuster, essentially encouraging a halt to Proposition 50’s success. He suggested that the latest effort is a threat to Republicans’ political power in the state of California.

“The Unconstitutional Redistricting Vote in California is a GIANT SCAM in that the entire process, in particular the voting itself, is RIGGED,” said Trump.

During a Tuesday briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt insinuated that election fraud took place and that the ballots were fraudulent, without evidence. Leavitt also said the White House is contemplating unilateral action in hopes of eventually banning mail-in voting. That action may occur through a new executive order, news sources state.

In a victorious speech, Newsom reflected on Prop 50’s success, emphasizing that it is not merely a victory for California but an achievement for the entire country. He also suggested that President Trump and his administration’s actions are a threat to democracy, referencing the deployment of the National Guard into democratic cities and the White House press secretary’s groundless accusations of election fraud.

“Tonight, I’m proud, but I’m very mindful and sober of the moment we are living in,” Newsom said at an election viewing event. “Donald Trump does not believe in fair and free elections, period and full stop.”

For incumbent Republicans in California, five GOP members now face lesser chances of re-election and have higher chances of losing their seats in 2026’s midterms. Those five candidates are Rocklin Rep. Kevin Kiley, Corona Rep. Ken Calvert, Hanford Rep. David Valadao, Escondido Rep. Darrell Issa, and Chico Rep. Doug LaMalfa.

For Democratic leaders in California across various cities such as Stockton, Turlock, Santa Clarita, Cypress, and Costa Mesa, each of those candidates’ seats will likely be safer under Proposition 50 as next year’s midterm elections approach. Those five candidates are Rep. Josh Harder, Rep. Derek Tran, Rep. Adam Gray, Rep. Dave Min, and Rep. George Whitesides.

As this occurred, other Democratic candidates in local races across the country in states such as Virginia, Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York City swayed heavily in Democratic favor. Most of the candidates in those states received a lot of support from voters, illustrating an overall sense of displeasure with the current Republican majority’s efforts during Trump’s second term.

Zohran Mamdani defeated Andrew Cuomo and is currently receiving national attention for his win in New York City’s mayoral race. Two lead Democratic candidates in Virginia, Rep. Abigail Spanberger is now Virginia’s first woman governor, and Jay Jones is now attorney general, overcoming a text message scandal that placed his candidacy in jeopardy.

Democrats in Georgia managed to flip over two seats in the state’s Public Service Commission through the votes of Peter Hubbard and Alicia Johnson. Democrats retained control of the Supreme Court in Pennsylvania, and Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherill won the governor’s race in New Jersey. Democratic Rep. Aftab Pureval has won reelection as Cincinnati’s mayor, defeating Vice President J.D. Vance’s half-brother, Cory Bowman.

Most of the Democratic candidates who received these wins across the nation, received victories due to voters wanting better affordability of housing costs, affordable food, SNAP benefits, a better labor market, and adequate access to affordable healthcare; which these candidates seemingly agree upon despite some of their ideological differences, according to critics and political experts.

In California’s Special Election, nearly seven million voters had already voted ahead of Nov., with 4.6 million of those occurring through mail-in ballots. An additional 2.3 million dropped off their ballots at local drop boxes and election centers, in which they initially received their ballots in the mail.

If overwhelming voting efforts from Americans continue to occur, such as the happenings of Nov. 4th’s polls, Democratic leaders will have a better ability to challenge Republican leaders in the 2026 midterm elections, the 2028 presidential primary, and the Trump administration’s current policies and efforts.

On the morning of Nov. 5, a day after the Special Election, the California Republican Party filed and announced a federal lawsuit, targeting the state’s new congressional district maps. The suit alleges that Proposition 50 “unconstitutionally gerrymanders districts in violation of the 14th and 15th Amendments.”-
