Sacramento is pushing the new Prop. 50 maps that carve up communities like Culver City, Torrance, and Long Beach. These maps, drawn in secret, replace the transparent ones created by the independent Citizens Redistricting Commission. This is a blatant power grab and a threat to fair representation.

Governor Newsom claims this is about fighting Trump, but Californians already have a fair system. The independent commission was meant to take power away from politicians and give it to voters. Is this really about Trump, or is it about consolidating power in Sacramento while communities of color pay the price?

The irony is that the same forces that opposed Prop. 20—which created the independent commission—now support Prop. 50. Politicians never willingly give up power. Prop. 50 is simply the latest example of their expanding it.

Prop. 50—which will be on the statewide ballot November 4—is a direct attack on Black communities, diluting their voting power. In Los Angeles County, where Black residents make up just 7.6% of the population, every vote matters. Yet Prop. 50 slices apart neighborhoods in Culver City, Torrance, and Long Beach.

Long Beach’s Black population is being unfairly lumped into districts with Huntington Beach and Newport Beach, communities with little shared history or identity. This undermines fair representation. Huntington Beach’s conservative council decisions, like repealing the city’s celebration of Black History Month, do not align with Black voters’ interests. Newport Beach’s affluent, predominantly white demographic further emphasizes the divide. Merging these communities dilutes the power and voice of Black voters in Long Beach.

We’ve seen this pattern before, and the racist LA City Council recording perfectly demonstrated how redistricting can be weaponized. Prop. 50 follows the same playbook: divide communities, protect incumbents, and keep power in the hands of politicians. Activists and leaders from the California Legislative Black Caucus have voiced strong opposition, emphasizing that this doesn’t serve the interests of African American voters in these areas. Supporting this measure means surrendering your voice to power-hungry politicians. It must be outright rejected.

Let’s look at the bigger picture: families are struggling with high gas prices, housing costs, homelessness, and shrinking budgets. But, somehow, Sacramento is spending $230 million on a special election to redraw maps in secret. Where were the hearings and public debate? And more importantly, why weren’t communities given the chance to weigh in before their neighborhoods were split apart?

I am afraid we are being played as pawns in a much bigger political game. The Black community must pay close attention to Prop. 50 because the politics behind it are deceitful, and I fear our community will once again be the one that pays the price.
