Singer-songwriter R. Kelly, whose salacious legal proceedings have been preempted by the ongoing trial involving Sean “Diddy” Combs, has returned to the media spotlight after years in confinement. The 58-year-old Kelly has reportedly been hospitalized, after overdosing on prescription medication at the federal prison where he has been incarcerated since 2023.
The discredited entertainer was transported to Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina following the episode on June 13. He had been treated for anxiety and sleep disorders.
Kelly’s legal team maintains that an assassination plot has been conceived by prison officials to terminate their client. They have filed motions, one of which reads in part that “…Mr. Kelly’s life is in danger, and that danger is coming from Bureau of Prisons officials and their actions.”
Nicole Blank Becker, a lawyer with extensive experience in sex-related crimes prior to being retained by Kelly, spoke to her client on Monday, and revealed he was taken back to the prison and is in solitary confinement.
“What is happening right now with him is insane,” Becker said.
“I hope that this really results in someone, somewhere, somehow getting a hold of him today and getting him back in the hospital.”
The scheme allegedly involves members of the White Supremacist Aryan Brotherhood (AB) gang, who are being utilized by authorities to carry out the murder. Reputed AB member Mikeal Glenn Stine was selected as the trigger man because he is terminally ill with cancer. He claims he was transferred from the Arizona prison where he was initially confined to North Carolina to facilitate the hit, and be given the opportunity to live out the rest of his life as a free man in return for killing Kelly.
Prison spokespersons dismissed the accusations as a “…fanciful conspiracy,” noting that the Bureau of Prisons policy precludes commenting “…on pending litigation or matters that are the subject of legal proceedings.”
Another of Kelly’s attorneys, Beau Brindley is seeking intervention, possibly by way of President Donald Trump who has begun his current administration with a flurry of legal pardons.
“He may be the only power in this country that can save a life and end this corruption before it’s too late,” Brindley replied in a written statement.
Perhaps one of the most successful R&B male artists of the 1990s, Kelly’s career was derailed by a 2021 conviction for child pornography, sexual exploitation and racketeering, and similar charges. He is presently serving a 30-year sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner, N.C. His current release date is Dec. 21, 2045.
