I won’t be surprised if some people consider this laughable and self-aggrandizing. In 1995 when my husband and I started telling people about the world of national parks we discovered on our epic road trip around the country, some laughed and others started rolling their eyes at our approach. They felt we had to be exaggerating because if such a world existed that was so accessible and affordable, surely they’d already know about it? You may find the concepts in the video as challenging to believe if you don’t already have some foundation.

I happily turn the consciousness that would propose reopening Alcatraz Prison over to the divine, because the few hours I spent at this unit of the National Park System drove me nearly mad with urgency to get off. Alcatraz Island is supposed to be a cautionary tale from our history, not a place to brutalize new generations of Americans.
