For more than three decades, Los Angeles farmers markets have been more than just places to shop—they’ve been the heartbeat of our community, providing fresh, local produce to underserved communities and a platform for local farmers and vendors to thrive. Now, we face the devastating reality that some of these markets are at risk of shutting down.
In response, the non-profit organization Food Access LA, which runs the markets, has launched the “Save the Markets” campaign, a 30-day effort with the goal of raising $12,000 per month, or 300 monthly donors contributing $40 each, to keep these vital markets open.
Food Access LA (formerly SEE-LA) has supported local food systems since 1996, ensuring access to fresh, affordable produce for underserved communities. Unlike farmers markets in other cities, Los Angeles Farmers Markets are not city-run, meaning they rely entirely on community donations and support. More than 50 percent of funding for Food Access LA comes from government grants, which are no longer enough to cover operational costs like market space rental and vendor support.
“It is time for us to ask for community support to keep these markets alive,” said Jennifer Grissom, executive director at Food Access LA. “These markets are essential to the neighborhoods they support. Without them, access to fresh, local, seasonal food for hundreds of families would be drastically reduced, along with a negative economic impact on the local vendors who show up every week for their communities.”
The Food Access LA Farmers’ Markets serve more than 10,000 shoppers each week, providing access to fresh, local produce at affordable prices. They support more than 250 farmers and 200 vendors, many of whom rely on these markets for their livelihood. These markets also offer programs like the EBT Market Match, which matches up to $15 per week per market for those on EBT, helping low-income families access fresh fruits and vegetables.
A survey conducted by a student group found that prices at these markets are comparable to grocery stores, making them an essential resource for the community, especially in areas like Crenshaw.
