There are a variety of good ways to stay in shape and aware of the world around us. One of the best ways to get in touch with nature and stay in great shape is to take a hike- literally. For those Antelope Valley residents looking to remain active this weekend, there is a special event happening tomorrow, May 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. as docents at the Placerita Canyon Nature Center will host a hike.

The hike and tour will cover the canyon’s native flora, history and geology. The natural area entrance is located at 19152 Placerita Canyon Road. There is a public parking lot nearby and the gathering spot for the hike will be at the Acorn Amphitheater. Placerita Canyon is a state park and managed by Los Angeles County.

Hiking shoes are recommended for the tour as there may be shallow stream crossings. The hike will end around noon. Upon the end of the hike, hikers will have the opportunity to picnic with a bring-your-own lunch at the amphitheater.

For logistical questions, contact Bill Neil at bgneill@earthlink.net. For more information on the Placerita Canyon Center, visit www.placerita.org. This event is hosted by the California Native Plant Society- Los Angeles/Santa Monica Mountains.
