Ballplayer learns tweet lesson

A local Major League Baseball prospect this week learned the hard lesson regarding “delete before you tweet.”

Brooks Matthews, a Houston Astros prospect, who played last year with the Lancaster JetHawks, got into a little social media trouble, when he tweeted that “no lady needs to be on ESPN” in reference to analyst Jessica Mendoza during Wednesday’s National League wild-card game. Matthews deleted the tweet and changed his profile to a brown dog … but not before his mistake was re-tweeted for eternity.

“We have communicated with the player, who agreed that this tweet was inappropriate and insensitive and has since apologized,” the Astros said in a statement. “We also apologize to Ms. Mendoza, who is an outstanding broadcaster that we have had the pleasure of working with this season.”

The JetHawks have yet to respond about Matthews’ tweet nor has the 23-year-old infielder made a comment.

Mendoza last October became the first female analyst for a nationally-televised major league playoff game.
