FAME church to host special guest speaker for annual missionary day

Dr. Shirley Carson-Reed, international president of the Women’s Missionary Society of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, will be the guest speaker for Annual Missionary Day on Sunday, May 29, 10 a.m., at First AME Church of Los Angeles. The public is invited to attend.

The service, themed “Excellence in Worship—Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” will be part of a day-long celebration of the role and work of missionaries within the church and outside the walls. A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Dr. Carson-Reed is an honors graduate of Madison University. Additionally, she received an honorary doctorate in 2010 from the AME University in Monrovia, Liberia.

“We are honored to have Dr. Carson-Reed as our speaker,” said Vivian Hines, President of FAME’S Sarah Allen’s Women’s Missionary Society (WMS). “Her 34 years of exemplary service to our denomination’s WMS continues to be an inspiration to countless women in white around the world.”

As president, Dr. Carson-Reed oversees the work of missionaries throughout the AME Connection, which is comprised of 20 Episcopal Districts in 39 countries on five continents. The work includes bringing souls to Christ, promoting health and wellness, encouraging economic development and speaking out for peace and social justice.
