The city of Palmdale is asking residents to not drink or do drugs and drive this holiday season and is urging revelers to take part in the various 3D month activities. The term “3D” refers to drunk and drugged driving.
“Because of higher than usual impaired and intoxicated driving incidents, the winter holidays are among the deadliest times of the year,” said Kery German, Palmdale crime prevention officer. “In fact, December is recognized as National Drunk and Drugged Driving (3D) Prevention Month, and the city of Palmdale is getting the word out that participation in 3D Month is not only easy, but will help continue to reduce the number of alcohol-related fatalities.”
This week the city launched its annual “Tie-One-On” campaign in which residents may participate by picking up a red ribbon at the Neighborhood Services Department, 38250 Sierra Hwy., second floor and displaying it on their car antennas in support of 3D month. The Tie-One-On campaign continues through New Year’s Day.
Motorists are also encouraged to drive with their headlights on in honor of “Lights for Liberty” on Friday, Dec. 18. German said this event recognizes persons who have been killed or injured by drunk drivers.
The Palmdale sheriff’s station will be out in force the next few months to prevent impaired driving by conducting regular DUI checkpoints. “If you drive after drinking or using drugs, you will be caught, arrested and prosecuted,” German added. “Not only is this an embarrassing situation, but also expensive. The cost of your defense and potential fines can be thousands of dollars, the potential loss of your car, or worse yet, [you could] take another person’s life.”
