he Los Angeles Unified School District board agreed Tuesday to appoint an interim, non-voting representative to fill the board seat left vacant by the death of Marguerite Poindexter LaMotte.

The board initially rejected the proposal, but board member Bennett Kayser changed his vote, breaking a 3-3 deadlock. The interim member is expected to be appointed in March, following an ad-hoc committee meeting about the person’s duties.

The committee, chaired by board member Steve Zimmer, is expected to make a report to the board on Feb. 11.

The board previously scheduled a special election for June 3 to fill LaMotte’s seat, with an Aug. 12 runoff, if needed. The interim member will serve in the First District seat until an elected representative is sworn in.

LaMotte died while attending an education conference in San Diego. She was 80.

Meanwhile, the district announced that a public memorial service for LaMotte will be held this Saturday.

The service will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Washington Preparatory High School, 10860 S. Denker Ave.

District officials said parking will be available at nearby Los Angeles Southwest College, 1600 W. Imperial Highway, and free shuttles will run to and from the service.
