Judge tells singer Chris Brown to meet with probation officer before next hearing

LOS ANGELES, Calif.–A judge today instructed R&B singer Chris Brown–who is on probation for a 2009 assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna–to meet with his probation officer before his next court hearing in January.

“You are directed to report to probation as soon as you return from your trip,” Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg told the 23-year-old entertainer, who will be traveling outside the United States.

The judge, who set Brown’s next progress report hearing for Jan. 17, said she received information that he was “in compliance” with the terms of his probation and had completed 180 days of community labor required under his June 2009 guilty plea.

“That’s California repeating what’s been in previous progress reports (from Virginia),” Deputy District Attorney Mary Murray told the judge, who ordered the Los Angeles County Probation Department to prepare a supplemental report on Brown.

At a Sept. 24 hearing, Schnegg said Brown had tested positive for marijuana in Virginia, where his probation had been handled before he recently bought a home in the Los Angeles area.

The judge said a mandatory drug test would not have been a condition of Brown’s probation in California and that he produced a medical marijuana card and told officials he had ingested the drug in California.

After pleading guilty nearly 3 1/2 years ago to assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury, the singer was sentenced to five years probation, a yearlong domestic violence program that he has already completed and 180 days of community labor.

After admitting that he assaulted Rihanna during an argument that began around 12:30 a.m. Feb. 8, 2009, while the singers were in a rented Lamborghini in the Hancock Park area, Brown issued a videotaped apology

In an August interview with Oprah, Rihanna said she has forgiven Brown and the two shared an embrace at the MTV Video Music Awards last month.

Brown’s court appearance came one day after he attended Rihanna’s Halloween party in West Hollywood, where he and a group of male friends drew attention for dressing as Taliban fighters.
