SANTA MONICA, Calif.–San Fernando Valley residents who somehow manage to travel to Santa Monica during the July 15-18 closure of the San Diego (405) Freeway will be rewarded with free carnival rides.
Pacific Park, the amusement park on the Santa Monica Pier, announced it will offer free unlimited-ride passes to guests with a San Fernando Valley ZIP code during the freeway closure.
Guests from other areas can also get a reward that weekend if they purchase an unlimited-ride pass–a free construction-cone orange cotton candy.
“If guests can make their way to Pacific Park through the detours and stifling traffic, we want to recognize their efforts with a free unlimited ride pass and/or locally with a free construction-cone colored orange cotton candy,” according to Jeff Klocke, director of marketing and sales at Pacific Park.
The offers will be available from 7 p.m. July 15 to 11 p.m. July 17. San Fernando Valley residents will have to show proof of their address to qualify for the free ride passes.
The freeway closure between the Ventura (101) and Santa Monica (10) freeways is being planned to accommodate demolition of a portion of the Mulholland Drive bridge over the 405. The work is part of a $1 billion freeway improvement project through the Sepulveda Pass.
Transportation officials and elected leaders are urging residents to avoid the area and stay close to home during the closure to avoid congestion.
The northbound freeway will be closed for the entire 10-mile stretch, while the southbound freeway will be closed for four miles from the Ventura (101) Freeway to Getty Center Drive.
Some freeway lanes will begin closing as early as 8 p.m. July 15, with all lanes expected to be closed around midnight.
