Woman found dead inside

LANCASTER, Calif.—Sheriff's deputies confirmed that firefighters found the body of a woman inside a two-story home in the Quartz Hill section of Lancaster after a fire brought under control.

The fire was reported at 5:15 p.m. Sunday in the 42000 block of 56th Street West, Supervisor Michael Pittman of the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

The blaze was under control by 5:26 p.m.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, said the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

Barricaded in home

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—An 89-year-old woman was fatally stabbed this afternoon, allegedly by her grandson, who barricaded himself in a home, police said.

Paramedics and police were called to the 900 block of West 41st Street in South Los Angeles at 2:10 p.m., said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Karen Rayner.

Flees scene

INGLEWOOD, Calif.—A woman stabbed a man during an argument aboard a Metro bus in Inglewood today.

The stabbing occurred about 10:15 a.m. on a Line 40 bus that was westbound on Florence Avenue at Hillcrest Boulevard, according to Luis Inzunza of Metro.

The injured man, in his 40s, was taken to a hospital for treatment of wounds to his head and abdomen, Inzunza said. His condition was not immediately known. The woman fled the scene.

Mother, son in critical condition

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Detectives sought the public’s help today to locate the female driver who struck and critically injured a 45-year-old woman and her teenage son as they were crossing a street in South Los Angeles.

The hit-and-run crash occurred about 11:33 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of 80th Street and Western Avenue, according to Los Angeles police.

A woman driving northbound on Western Avenue hit the woman and her 17-year-old son as they were crossing the street in the crosswalk, according to police.

Elderly Black woman

PALMDALE, Calif.—The body of a woman killed by a hit-and-run driver was discovered at a Palmdale intersection today.

The body was found on 50th Street E just south of Avenue M about 12:05 a.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Anthony Martin.

According to a CHP preliminary accident report, an “elderly Black female was struck by an unknown vehicle on 50th Street East, south of Avenue M. Following the collision the unknown suspect vehicle fled the scene.”

Yvette Hollingsworth was recently named chief compliance officer for Wells Fargo & Co. Hollingsworth, who most recently served as managing director and global head of operations compliance and financial crimes compliance & risk management for Barclays Corporate & Investment Bank, will begin her new role on June 1, 2012. Hollingsworth will be based in San Francisco, and will report to Caryl Athanasiu, executive vice president and chief operational risk officer in the corporate risk group. As chief compliance officer, Hollingsworth will be responsible for ensuring that all areas of the company meet compliance management responsibilities and abide by all applicable laws and regulations. Her team will continue to provide independent oversight of business-based compliance management activities.

U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) issued the following statement after the Senate voted to confirm Los Angeles attorney Paul Watford to serve on the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals: “It is great news that the Senate has confirmed Paul Watford, an exceptionally talented attorney, to serve on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He has a breadth of experience as a former prosecutor and a top appellate litigator and will make an excellent addition to the federal bench. However, I am very disappointed that more of my Republican colleagues did not join us in backing this highly qualified nominee.” When Watford is sworn in, he will be only the second African American serving on the Ninth Circuit.
