Tangled edges out competition

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—"Tangled,'' Disney's animated re-telling of the Rapunzel tale, took over the top spot at the box office, knocking the smash "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I'' into second place, according to final figures released today.

The 3-D "Tangled'' earned $21.6 million between Friday and Sunday to lead a generally lackluster weekend at theaters, according to Hollywood.Com Box-Office. The film has earned $96.6 million in two weeks of release.

Harry Potter reigns

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—A wizard and a princess are sitting pretty this holiday weekend, as Harry Potter's latest installment and the newest Disney movie are nearly tied for first place at the continent's box office derby.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1'' is crossing the $220 million line with a $50.4 million weekend, according to projections from Warner Bros.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—A boy wizard conjured up a magical opening weekend, as "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1'' earned $125 million to easily top the domestic box office, according to final figures released today.

The strong showing was a surprise to no one, thanks to the legions of "Potter'' fans across the country and around the globe. Many fans waited for hours in line to catch midnight showings Friday morning. Those showings alone earned $24 million, according to Hollywood.Com Box Office.

"Megamind" remains strong at box office

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—"Megamind'' is having a 30 mega-dollar weekend, and holds down the number one spot at the box office today. The Will Ferrell/Brad Pitt/Tina Fey-voiced cartoon is from Paramount and Dreamworks Animation.

Fox's "Unstoppable'' opened as the number two movie, with an estimated $23.5 million in ticket sales, according to Hollywood.com.

The Warner Bros. comedy "Due Date'' holds down the number three spot, with a $15.6 million gross. It is on track to pull in $59 million over two weeks.

"Megamind"

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—The animated superhero comedy "Megamind'' soared at theaters over the weekend, easily defeating two other debut films to land atop the box office, according to final figures released today.

Featuring the voices of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and Brad Pitt, "Megamind'' earned $46 million in its opening weekend, according to Hollywood.Com Box-Office.

Yvette Hollingsworth was recently named chief compliance officer for Wells Fargo & Co. Hollingsworth, who most recently served as managing director and global head of operations compliance and financial crimes compliance & risk management for Barclays Corporate & Investment Bank, will begin her new role on June 1, 2012. Hollingsworth will be based in San Francisco, and will report to Caryl Athanasiu, executive vice president and chief operational risk officer in the corporate risk group. As chief compliance officer, Hollingsworth will be responsible for ensuring that all areas of the company meet compliance management responsibilities and abide by all applicable laws and regulations. Her team will continue to provide independent oversight of business-based compliance management activities.

U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) issued the following statement after the Senate voted to confirm Los Angeles attorney Paul Watford to serve on the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals: “It is great news that the Senate has confirmed Paul Watford, an exceptionally talented attorney, to serve on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He has a breadth of experience as a former prosecutor and a top appellate litigator and will make an excellent addition to the federal bench. However, I am very disappointed that more of my Republican colleagues did not join us in backing this highly qualified nominee.” When Watford is sworn in, he will be only the second African American serving on the Ninth Circuit.
