Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp. study

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Southern California boasts more manufacturing than any other region in the United States, which remains the world's largest manufacturing economy, according to a report issued today.

The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp.'s study, "Manufacturing: Still a Force in Southern California,'' concludes that it is a myth that manufacturing is disappearing from the region and that all operations are moving to countries with low-cost labor.

ACLU and the Council on American-Islamic Relations

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—A suit filed by the ACLU and the Council on American-Islamic Relations accuses the FBI of violating the 1st Amendment rights of hundreds of Muslims by using a paid informant to monitor several Southern California mosques.

The mosques were targeted based solely on religious grounds, according to the suit, which was filed in federal court Tuesday on behalf of three Muslims and seeks damages, class-action status and the destruction of all materials collected by an FBI informant.

Physical and mental health treatment and research

PASADENA, Calif.—Kaiser Permanente Southern California researchers were chosen to join the National Mental Health Research Network, which was recently funded with a $10.5 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health, it was announced today.

Five other Kaiser Permanente research centers, in Northern California, Oregon, Colorado, Georgia and Hawaii, are also included in the 10-center MHRN network.

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Salary information for nearly 37,000 Los Angeles city employees was posted online in a move City Controller Wendy Greuel said was designed to make local government more transparent.

The salaries listed in the database reflect reduced pay due to furloughs and other cutbacks, as well as increased pay due to overtime, bonuses, uniform and car allowances and other benefits, according to Greuel.

Federal racketeering

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Nearly five dozen people were arrested overnight by a multi-agency task force that targeted members and associates of the 38th Street gang.

Many of those arrested were named in a federal racketeering indictment that alleges violent crimes, large-scale drug trafficking and extortion of both drug dealers and legitimate businesses, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Alabama
Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.
 

Arkansas
The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
