Gilani Taylor fighting for her life

BOYLE HEIGHTS, Calif.—The father of a 27-year-old woman rescued from a fiery crash that killed her 9-year-old daughter said that he expects his wife will walk out of the hospital, despite her being hospitalized in critical condition with burns over 80 percent of her body.

Rodney Taylor, the husband of aspiring singer Gilani Taylor, told a news conference at County-USC Medical Center where his wife was hospitalized, “I lost my baby girl... just her smile—you’ve seen the pictures—got me going.”

Number of grandmother parents grows

She’s a praying woman who faithfully attends Sunday school and morning service every week, along with Tuesday night prayer and Bible study. She wakes up every morning and prays for the family and prepares breakfast for her household full of grandbabies. She struggles to make ends meet on her measly Social Security check and government funds. Not to mention her health isn’t the best.

She’s that grandmother who has paid her dues, raised her own children and is now raising her children’s children.

Mother, son in critical condition

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Detectives sought the public’s help today to locate the female driver who struck and critically injured a 45-year-old woman and her teenage son as they were crossing a street in South Los Angeles.

The hit-and-run crash occurred about 11:33 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of 80th Street and Western Avenue, according to Los Angeles police.

A woman driving northbound on Western Avenue hit the woman and her 17-year-old son as they were crossing the street in the crosswalk, according to police.

Beatriz Flores

SANTA CLARITA, Calif.—A single mother of four—who reportedly said she was only transporting drugs to pay the rent—pleaded no contest to two felony charges today.

Superior Court Judge Graciela Freixes immediately sentenced Beatriz Flores, 31, to three years in prison following her plea to one count each of child abuse and possession for sale of heroin, according to Shiara Davila-Morales of the District Attorney’s Office. Four other drug-related counts against Flores were dismissed as a result of her plea.

Violation of a new truancy law

LONG BEACH, Calif.—The 43-year-old mother of a middle school student was arrested because of her son's irregular attendance in school, a violation of a new truancy law in Long Beach.

Ermila Zamora was arrested Monday after school officials noticed the boy had missed more than 20 days of school, said Rico Fernandez of the Long Beach Police Department.

Yvette Hollingsworth was recently named chief compliance officer for Wells Fargo & Co. Hollingsworth, who most recently served as managing director and global head of operations compliance and financial crimes compliance & risk management for Barclays Corporate & Investment Bank, will begin her new role on June 1, 2012. Hollingsworth will be based in San Francisco, and will report to Caryl Athanasiu, executive vice president and chief operational risk officer in the corporate risk group. As chief compliance officer, Hollingsworth will be responsible for ensuring that all areas of the company meet compliance management responsibilities and abide by all applicable laws and regulations. Her team will continue to provide independent oversight of business-based compliance management activities.

U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) issued the following statement after the Senate voted to confirm Los Angeles attorney Paul Watford to serve on the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals: “It is great news that the Senate has confirmed Paul Watford, an exceptionally talented attorney, to serve on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He has a breadth of experience as a former prosecutor and a top appellate litigator and will make an excellent addition to the federal bench. However, I am very disappointed that more of my Republican colleagues did not join us in backing this highly qualified nominee.” When Watford is sworn in, he will be only the second African American serving on the Ninth Circuit.
