Council members voted them into office

VERNON, Calif.—Vernon Mayor Hilario “Larry” Gonzales and interim City Attorney Mike Montgomery resigned today following criticism from Sen. Kevin De Leon.

Gonzales submitted his resignation, but it won’t become effective until his pension payments are confirmed by the California Public Employee System, the Los Angeles Times reported on its website.

Gonzales has been a member of the City Council since 1974 and mayor since 2009.

Field of candidates already includes three city officials

  LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Former Los Angeles City Councilman Greig Smith today endorsed Council President Pro Tempore Jan Perry for mayor in 2013.
  
Smith, who left office in July and was replaced by Councilman Mitchell Englander in the 12th District, said Perry was well suited for the job.

Booked on suspicion of felony robbery and assault

SAN GABRIEL, Calif.—San Gabriel's mayor was arrested today on suspicion of felony robbery and assault for allegedly taking a woman's purse during an argument, and then driving away in his SUV with her hanging on to the side of his vehicle, police said.

Mayor Albert Y.M. Huang, 35, was booked on suspicion of felony robbery, felony assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury, and misdemeanor battery, said San Gabriel police Lt. Ariel Duran. He was held at the police station on $100,000 bail.

State of the City address

PALMDALE, Calif.—At the Hilton Garden Inn on Monday afternoon, a banquet room packed with Palmdale city workers and Antelope Valley Black Chamber of Commerce members, heard Mayor Jim Ledford make his annual State of the City address.

The City of Palmdale has recently undergone many improvements as well as budget cuts and program reductions, however Ledford emphasized the importance of looking forward to the future, despite California’s declining economy.

"CicLAvia" will be held Oct. 10

LOS ANGELES - Vehicles will be banished from certain Los Angeles streets for a day next month to give pedestrians and bicyclists a chance to explore the city, local officials announced today.

"CicLAvia'' will be held in Los Angeles for the first time on Oct. 10.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day, a 7.5-mile route from East Hollywood to Boyle Heights will be closed off to motor vehicles.

Yvette Hollingsworth was recently named chief compliance officer for Wells Fargo & Co. Hollingsworth, who most recently served as managing director and global head of operations compliance and financial crimes compliance & risk management for Barclays Corporate & Investment Bank, will begin her new role on June 1, 2012. Hollingsworth will be based in San Francisco, and will report to Caryl Athanasiu, executive vice president and chief operational risk officer in the corporate risk group. As chief compliance officer, Hollingsworth will be responsible for ensuring that all areas of the company meet compliance management responsibilities and abide by all applicable laws and regulations. Her team will continue to provide independent oversight of business-based compliance management activities.

U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) issued the following statement after the Senate voted to confirm Los Angeles attorney Paul Watford to serve on the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals: “It is great news that the Senate has confirmed Paul Watford, an exceptionally talented attorney, to serve on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He has a breadth of experience as a former prosecutor and a top appellate litigator and will make an excellent addition to the federal bench. However, I am very disappointed that more of my Republican colleagues did not join us in backing this highly qualified nominee.” When Watford is sworn in, he will be only the second African American serving on the Ninth Circuit.
