Bittersweet business decision

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Calling it a "bittersweet business decision,'' Los Angeles Lakers part-owner Earvin "Magic'' Johnson sold his share of the team for an undisclosed amount.

"I am truly humbled to have been a Lakers player for 13 years and an owner for over 10 years,'' Johnson said in a statement released by the team.

"I thank Dr. (Jerry) Buss from the deepest part of my heart and soul for allowing me such an incredible opportunity.

Exhibition games

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—The Los Angeles Lakers will face the Denver Nuggets Saturday night in their first game at Staples Center since winning their second consecutive NBA championship in June.

The exhibition game will mark the Staples Center debuts of three players the team signed as free agents during the off-season—forward Matt Barnes, guard Steve Blake and center Theo Ratliff—and their two second-round draft choices, forwards Derrick Caracter and Devin Ebanks.

Los Angeles defeats Boston Celtics in Game 7, for the first time ever

For the second consecutive year, the Los Angeles Lakers are National Basketball Association (NBA) champions. What makes the recent win even more enjoyable was that the title was won by defeating the Boston Celtics, the team that defeated the Lakers for the championship in 2008.

The Celtics are a team that has a history with the Lakers in NBA Finals competition, having matched up against them 11 times previously, winning nine. Four of these Finals matches have gone to a deciding Game 7, with the Celtics winning every time.

Here they go again

The National Basketball Association could not have scripted a better scenario, in the opinion of many. The Los Angeles Lakers are in the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics, and they are competing in Game 7 to determine the league championship. Tonight should be an epic battle with star power, history, and more. The league has not seen a night like this in a long time.

The Showtime Lakers’ first NBA title

May 16 marks the 30th anniversary of one of the landmark sports events in Los Angeles history. On that Friday night in 1980, the Los Angeles Lakers took a 3-2 finals lead into Philadelphia in a quest to clinch the National Basketball Association (NBA) title. The culmination of the evening’s events would mark the first major accomplishment of a team that would be called “Showtime.”

Across Black America

Here’s a look at African American people and issues making headlines throughout the country.

Alabama
Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.

Arkansas
The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
