Forced to evacuate, they were happy to return home

Littlerock is known as the fruit basket of the Antelope Valley, because of the plentiful fruit grown in the area—apples, pears, peaches, strawberries. But last week the small community made national headlines for another reason. It was the scene of a massive train derailment.

Area residents were evacuated Wednesday afternoon, but allowed to return home early Thursday morning following the accident.

Doctrines vary, view on life does not

As we move deeper into Women’s History Month, the status of Black women’s health is a subject ripe for discussion, and there is no topic more connected to health than abortion.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, 30 percent of abortions occur to non-Hispanic Black women; 8 percent of women who have abortions have never used a method of birth control, and non-use is greatest among those who are young, poor, Black, Hispanic or less educated.

U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) issued the following statement after the Senate voted to confirm Los Angeles attorney Paul Watford to serve on the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals: “It is great news that the Senate has confirmed Paul Watford, an exceptionally talented attorney, to serve on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He has a breadth of experience as a former prosecutor and a top appellate litigator and will make an excellent addition to the federal bench. However, I am very disappointed that more of my Republican colleagues did not join us in backing this highly qualified nominee.” When Watford is sworn in, he will be only the second African American serving on the Ninth Circuit.
