Beat out 35 national schools

GRANADA HILLS, Calif.—Granada Hills Charter High School won the 2011 Academic Decathlon competition held in Charlotte, N.C. This marks the 12th straight year that an L.A. Unified School District-affiliated school has won.

The nine pupils scored 52,113.5 points out of the 60,000 possible, and bested 35 other schools in this year's finals, the district said.

8th Annual Workday

GARDENA, Calif.—On Saturday, May 14th, Sharefest Community Development will hold the 8th Annual Workday, mobilizing thousands of volunteers throughout LA County to complete tangible work projects that will change the quality of life for its residents. The largest project will take place at Gardena High School as the Los Angeles Mayor's office, LAUSD, Councilwoman Janice Hahn's Office, LAPD, City of Gardena, Bank of America and King's Harbor Church are set to join forces with volunteers from the school and the nearby community beautifying and modernizing the campus.

Reduced online courses as well

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Due to the ongoing budget crisis, the Los Angeles Unified School District announced today it will offer limited summer classes and support services, including reduced online courses and community food programs.

Starting July 6, summer school will be offered at select high schools for 11th graders who received a grade of "D'' or "F,'' and 10th graders who received an "F'' in required classes for graduation.

Students in 12th grade who do not graduate will be referred to Adult School.

P.S. ARTS

P.S. ARTS recently announced the launch of the Take PART (Public School Arts Regional Team) program in the Lawndale, Lennox, and Wiseburn Los Angeles County school districts. Take PART is an expansion of the Lawndale district arts initiative that has been supported with $1.7 million in grants from the Herb Alpert Foundation, and its goal is to facilitate arts education programs to benefit students and families in the districts. P.S. ARTS will lead the Take PART task force with school district leaders and other community stakeholders.

Jefferson High School

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Although the mayor of Los Angeles has no formal role in education, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will focus on education during his annual State of the City speech today at Jefferson High School.

Villaraigosa is expected to unveil new plans to "engage in more aggressive (education) reforms to give students and parents more and better choices,'' an aide said.

Villaraigosa is also expected to discuss the city's budget crisis, his transportation initiatives and public safety.

Alabama
Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.

The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
