91 freeway in Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif.—Authorities today identified one of two people killed in a two-vehicle crash on the westbound Riverside (91) Freeway in Fullerton.

The crash was reported at 11:34 p.m. Monday just west of Brookhurst Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver and sole occupant of a 2002 BMW 325i, identified as Douglas Robert McFarland, 25, of Torrance, died at the scene, said Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

1996 cold case

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—A hit-and-run motorist sought in a 1996 crash that killed three men in Los Angeles is featured on "America's Most Wanted's'' website page, police said.

On June 29, 1996, Jesus Lopez Gonzalez allegedly ran a red light on Main Street at Adams Boulevard in a 1989 Dodge Ram pickup about 2:10 a.m. and slammed into a 1996 Volkswagen GTI, killing Thomas Gibson, 23, Faustino Sanchez, 23, and Friedrich Allmendinger, 22, Los Angeles police Officer Bruce Borihanh said.

$5,000 reward

LANCASTER, Calif.—Sheriff's deputies today announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of whoever killed a 14-year-old girl and wounded six people at a Sept. 5 party in Lancaster.

Dominique Peatry of Lancaster was killed and two other females and four males, 13-26 years old, were shot near Nugent Street and Sixth Street East early that Sunday, Nicole Nishida of the sheriff's department said.

Reward offered

LOS ANGELES  - The Board of Supervisors approved a $20,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of a hit-and-run driver who killed a man in a wheelchair in Alhambra.

Shih-Siang Ho was struck about 1:20 p.m. last Dec. 1 at the Sixth Street undercrossing at Ramona Road and died at the scene. He had been heading home from his sister-in-law's house.

Alhambra police are hoping that someone can identify the driver or the vehicle, which probably had front-end damage on the passenger side.

McDonald’s owner killed by DUI driver

Veteran Los Angeles businessman Bob Johnson was killed in a highway accident this weekend in Las Vegas. He was 60 years old.

According to Las Vegas Police, Johnson, who owns a home in Las Vegas, was riding a 2008 Thoroughbred Trike south on Maryland Parkway at Twaine Avenue, when he was hit from behind and tossed off his bike by the driver of a 1998 Nissan Maxima.

The driver, Modest Lopez-Hernandez, allegedly then ran over Johnson again. The victim was taken to Sunrise Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Alabama
Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.
 

Arkansas
The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
