Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Skyhook Challenge

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will launch a fundraising campaign for blood cancer research during halftime tonight, when the Los Angeles Lakers will meet the New Orleans Hornets at Staples Center.

Abdul-Jabbar will take to the court to start the countdown clock for the Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Skyhook Challenge to raise $38,387, matching the record number of points he scored in his NBA career.

He was diagnosed with the disease in 2008.

HOLLYWOOD, Calif.—Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, and extreme skier Rory Bushfield were named today as the final two contestants on the ABC competition series “Splash,” in which 10 celebrities will compete in platform and springboard diving.

Named earlier as contestants were:
• Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh;
• comedian Louis Anderson;
• television personality Kendra Wilkinson;
• actor Drake Bell;

Former Laker

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—A statue of former Los Angeles Lakers center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, will be unveiled today outside Staples Center.

Abdul-Jabbar’s teammates with the 1980s “Showtime” Lakers Earvin “Magic” Johnson and James Worthy; the team’s coach, Pat Riley; former Laker player, coach and general manager Jerry West; and team executive Jeanie Buss are scheduled to join Abdul-Jabbar in speaking at the ceremony, which is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. and is open to the public.

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—The ball is now in a Los Angeles judge’s court in a lawsuit brought by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar against a trading card company and its CEO.

Superior Court Judge Zaven V. Sinanian said today he wanted more time to consider a defense motion to dismiss the executive from the case. A final status conference will be held tomorrow and trial is scheduled to start Dec. 12.

Three-day event is part of AARP’s National Event & Expo

WASHINGTON, D.C.—AARP today announced it will bring its Movies for Grownups® Film Festival to Los Angeles as part of the organization’s annual National Event & Expo, Life@50+.

Taking place September 22-24, this year’s lineup features some of the season’s great new films, including a few pre-release titles and a Hollywood premiere. Martin Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Seth Rogen and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are just some of the actors confirmed to attend the screenings and participate in panel discussions throughout this three-day event.

Alabama
Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.
 

Arkansas
The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
