Gins Liquor Store

INGLEWOOD, Calif.—A shooting outside an Inglewood liquor store early today left a 22-year-old man dead and a woman hospitalized with several gunshot wounds.

The shooting at Gins Liquor Store near 110th Street and Crenshaw Boulevard was reported at 12:28 a.m., Inglewood police Sgt. James Kirk said.

Shawn Bryant of Hawthorne, his girlfriend and several family members went to the liquor store for meter change, NBC4 reported. They were going to the beach to celebrate a birthday when two men robbed the group.

Janice and Gregory Bartmess

HAWTHORNE, Calif.—The daughter and son-in-law of an 86-year-old Hawthorne woman were arrested after police found her bedridden, with open sores and soiled clothing, police said.

Janice Bartmess and Gregory Bartmess, both 60, were arrested on suspicion of elder abuse, Hawthorne police said Saturday.

The couple also were booked on suspicion of cruelty to animals, because of the conditions of 13 dogs taken from the home in the 3700 block of 119th Place on Friday.

A tipster led police to the home.

From Los Angeles to Las Vegas

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Authorities today served warrants and conducted probation compliance checks in the Palmdale, South Los Angeles and Hawthorne areas targeting a tagging crew that caused hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage to buses and Metro trains.

Investigators served 17 arrest warrants and conducted six probation compliance checks, culminating a six-month investigation of the BDSK tagging crew, Lt. Vince Carter of the Sheriff's Transit Services Bureau said. Some arrests were made, and the operation was ongoing, Carter said.

Concertos come to Gardena and Pomona

OneLegacy, the non-profit organ and tissue recovery organization serving the greater Los Angeles area and a representative of Donate Life California is partnering with the California Southern Third Jurisdiction Church of God in Christ and the City of Refuge Church Men of the City to present the second annual “Give Thanks Give Life GospelFest” on Nov. 27 during New Direction Church in Pomona “When Women Praise” and Dec. 3-5 during the Man-Up Conference “When Men Worship,” at the City of Refuge Church in Gardena. Admission is free.

South Bay and Westside

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—A pair of small earthquakes rattled the South Bay and Westside overnight, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said today.

At 9:27 p.m., a magnitude 2.1 quake occurred in the San Pedro Channel, about 10 miles south of Long Beach. People reported feeling it in Long Beach, Inglewood and Pacific Palisades. It was centered on the Palos Verde Fault Zone, a rift that runs ashore in the Port of Los Angeles and runs along the northeastern side of the Palos Verdes Peninsula's hills.

California
San Diego college students and volunteers will carry out their sixth home restoration project on Wednesday, July 10 through Sunday, July 14. as part of the “Healing our Heroes’ Homes” (H3) program created by the nonprofit Embrace. The five-day effort will take place at the home of medically retired Marine Corps Capt. Sarah Bettencourt. Bettencourt served with many different units across the country during the Global War on Terrorism and developed a rare neurological disorder in 2008. With a focus to restore the homes of disabled veteran homeowners, H3 falls in line with Embrace’s mission to mobilize college-student volunteers and community members to serve less fortunate members of civilian and veteran communities. The project for the Bettencourts’ home includes kitchen and bathroom remodeling, building ADA-compliant disability ramps, widening their driveway to ADA standards, widening doorways and landscaping.

The 2013 Smithsonian Folklife Festival will showcase its five-year community research project on African American identity with the program “The Will to Adorn: African American Diversity, Style, and Identity.” This multicity collaboration examines the history and culture of the aesthetics of African Americans. The festival will be held June 26-30 and July 3-7, outdoors on the National Mall between Seventh and 14th streets. “Whether we realize it or not, we are all dress artists. The way we compose our look is a creative expression of our ideas about who we are and who we aspire to be,” said Diana N’Diaye, program curator. “This program explores the diversity of African American traditions of style, but also teaches young people the importance of documenting their own culture and saving that information for themselves and future generations.”
